Talented hip-hop artiste Shingirayi Maunganidze, popularly known as Schingy, has been nominated in five categories at the Zimbabwe Hip Hop Awards to be held tonight at Wing Wah Restaurant in Harare. He was nominated in the Best Male, Best Video, Song of the Year, Best Group and People’s Choice awards categories. An ecstatic Schingy said he was thrilled to have been nominated adding that it was a remarkable feat not only for him but also for his family and his group “Team Bho”.

“I am over the moon because of this recognition. This shows that the hard work is finally paying off. It is also good that organisers of the awards are now taking us seriously. As an artiste, I make music that appeals internationally and I have no doubt this was one of the things they took into consideration,” he said.

The musician is also nominated at the Christian Hip-Hop Awards to be held on Friday.

“Having such nominations on the same week makes me a real superstar. I think this will be my best week of the year,” he said.

The “Hamuko” hitmaker said he was now expecting to take his music career to another level breaking into the region.

“I am now setting my sights on regional and international collaborations in order to grow the Zimbabwe music industry.

“If the likes of P-Square have put their countries on the international music map, why can’t we do the same as hip hop artistes? I have great respect for our Zimbabwean brother Audius Mtawarira who never severed ties with his Zimbabwean roots and identity despite his breakthrough in Australia,” he said.

Speaking about maintaining one’s roots, Schingy said it was a pity that some contemporary artistes tend to view anything Zimbabwean or African as inferior to other cultures and trends.

“Let’s do away with the idea of looking down upon ourselves. We have what it takes to put Africa on spotlight through our music,” he noted.

He said Team Bho was aimed at promoting other artistes across the divide.

“Team Bhoo is a new movement that embodies many elements of the popular culture. The crew consists of musicians, producers, actors, models and DJs and it aims at impacting a positive message on the populace by using all their different skills,” he said.

Since its inception, Team Bhoo has made its presence felt through music and a clothing line that were launched.

“Musically, we have released a chart-topping single titled ‘Hamuko’ featuring veteran rapper, singer and producer Simba Tagz. We are working on the crew’s first full-length album which is being produced by MC Cut while on the fashion side, we have released three lines called ‘Team Bho Tees’, ‘Mr and Mrs Bho’ as well as ‘Hatipfeke Mabeads’, which was a collaboration with renowned fashion designer Tanaka Samukange,” he said.
