Seven employees, including a manager, were seriously injured after a gas tank exploded in a mine tunnel they were working in at Freda Rebecca Mine on Tuesday.

Some of the seven were taken to Bindura Provincial Hospital before being transferred to a hospital in Harare. Although the details were still sketchy by yesterday, sources said the explosion occurred while the employees were working in a mine tunnel in the afternoon.

Investigations to ascertain the cause of the explosion are still in progress.

Efforts to get comment from the mine’s general manager, Mr Toendepi Muganyi, were fruitless.

“I am in a meeting right now and that is why I am switching off my phone,” he said.

But sources said Mr Muganyi failed to make a presentation at the Imara business conference in Harare on Wednesday after he was summoned to the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development to make a report about the accident.

The presentation was then made by Bindura Nickel Corporation investors relations manager Miss Carol Mathonsi.

The gold mine is situated near Bindura, some 90km north-east of Harare.
