FORMER Zimbabwe international Harlington Shereni says the Harare Derby surprised him with the good standard of football that was on display at the National Sports Stadium on Sunday.

The ex-DeMbare star said he was surprised with the quality of the contest.

“I haven’t watched local football for some time but the game wasn’t bad like what people were complaining about,” said Shereni.

“I have heard people saying that the Derby is now lifeless and boring.

“But, honestly, it was not the case with what I have witnessed. I saw that the teams were building the game from the back and while the match was lacking goals they played well and I can say I am happy with what I saw today.”

Shereni said given the fact that the teams were losing their best players to South Africa, it was refreshing that they could still put on such a good show.

He said the domestic Premiership only get better if the corporate world inject substantive sponsorship packages to help retain the best talent to play at home.

“We are failing to retain our talented players. At the moment every player who plays well goes to South Africa and it affects our football because by the end of the season we have lose up to eight to 10 key footballers,” said Shereni.

“As a result our football keeps going down and the situation will remain so unless we get sponsors to help our football grow.

“During our time the movements were not as is the case now. We could afford to stay and play for our teams for a number of years before going to Europe.

“It’s not possible now because everyone who does well after five or six league games leaves with the first chance they get to play in South Africa because the conditions there are better.”

He plans to be involved in scouting for good players in the near future and linking them up with his European contacts.
