A 65-YEAR-OLD man was battered with iron bars and left with broken legs by his two sons who accused him of having a goblin that was bringing misfortune to the family, a Chiredzi court heard last week.

One of the sons, Oshedy Munangi, told the court that a traditional healer he consulted on why he could not get a job after finishing college claimed his father’s muti was the cause of his ill luck.

Oshedy and his brother Knowledge were sentenced to three years in prison when they appeared before Chiredzi Magistrate Tayengwa Chibanda facing assault charges.

However, 12 months of the sentence was conditionally suspended for five years.

Prosecutor Gladmore Gwara told the court that the brothers had had a long standing dispute with their father whom they constantly accused of being in possession of a goblin that was bringing misfortune to the family.

The court heard that in November last year at the family homestead in Ruware village, the brothers ambushed their father as he returned from a beer drink.

They assaulted him with iron bars and left his legs broken.

The court heard that the father David Munangi sustained serious injuries which were life threatening. He had to spend several months receiving therapy at Masvingo Provincial Hospital and is now using a wheelchair for mobility.

In mitigation, Oshedy told the court that the family had consulted traditional healers after he had failed to secure employment soon after completing his tertiary education in 2011.

The family was allegedly told that his father had a hand in his misfortunes.
