Strengthen the quality of energy, water and transport infrastructure, key prerequisites to attracting both public and private investments.

ZIMBABWE’S United Nations resident coordinator, Bishow Parajuli has urged the southern African country to revisit its policies in order to attract capital.

Speaking at a multi-stakeholder national dialogue on sustainable development goals (SDGS) in Harare on Wednesday Parajuli said: “… a policy environment conducive to attract capital is vital, especially for a country like Zimbabwe which is grappling with liquidity issues, narrow fiscal space and limited investments. Capital is plentiful, but we need to have the right national and international policy environment to attract them”.

Parajuli, who is also the United Nations Development Programme resident representative, also noted that it was important for the country to strengthen the quality of energy, water and transport infrastructure, key prerequisites to attracting both public and private investments.

“Upholding universal norms and standards on rule of law, human rights and good governance that will facilitate the flow of official development assistance and private capital in addition to help achieve SDGs themselves,” Parajuli added.

The SDGs, that will succeed the millennium development goals at the end of this year, are being formulated through one of the world’s widest consultative process that the UN secretary general, Ban ki Moon, has illustrated as a synthesis of “The Road to Dignity by 2030: Ending Poverty, Transforming All Lives and Protecting the Planet”.
