SPECIAL Olympics Zimbabwe has appealed to the corporate world for assistance to raise funds for their trip to Los Angeles, in the United States later this year for the Special Olympics World Summer Games.

The Games are set for July 25 to August 3 with athletes from across the globe expected to take part and Zimbabwe are hoping to send a 37-member team to take part in this global sporting event.

The Games provide a world stage that creates awareness that lead to acceptance and inclusion of all people with intellectual disability.

In this light, Special Olympics Zimbabwe has embarked on a sponsorship drive to raise funds for the forthcoming World Summer Games where Zimbabwe will be represented by 25 athletes with intellectual disabilities and 12 officials. The athletes will compete in athletics, golf and seven-aside soccer.

Two of the athletes, golfers, Viren Mehta and Munya Musariri, who are part of the team were crowned sportsman and junior sportsman of the year respectively at the Annual National Sports Awards in December last year.

The association hopes to raise funds for tickets, sporting and travelling kit for the team and it costs US$2 300 to fly each member of the delegation and they are hoping to raise US$85 100 to cater for everything.

In a press statement the association said the sponsorship would go a long way in making their participation a success.

We would therefore like to invite you to support Special Olympics Zimbabwe team as they represent our country at the World Games.

“Our success will be measured by our ability to send a team to the World Summer Games,” reads part of the statement.

Last year they held a dinner and golf day as part of their efforts to raise the required funds.

The ultimate goal of Special Olympics is to help persons with intellectual disabilities to participate as productive and respected members of society.
