A MARONDERA man has been sentenced to three months in prison after he was found guilty of sending obscene text messages to a woman who had spurned his love proposal.

The state prosecutor said Nicolette Bewa, 21, who is employed as a security guard in the town, proposed love to Patricia Mukumbiri, 24, through sending text messages to her mobile phone.

However, Mukumbiri replied Bewa turning down the proposal.

Angered by the rejection, Bewa then started to send unprintable obscene text messages to Mukumbiri, insinuating that she was a prostitute.

This forced Mukumbiri to make a police report leading to the arrest of Bewa.

The mobile phone with the obscene text messages was produced in court as evidence.

In mitigation, Bewa said he was unaware that sending obscene text messages was a criminal offence and pleaded with the magistrate, Jabulani Mzinyathi, to acquit him.

However, Mzinyathi found him guilty and gave Bewa an option to pay $30 as fine or serve three months in prison.
