TAKASHINGA Cricket Club coach Emmanuel Dube believes his side’s tour of Uganda will give a number of national team hopefuls the chance to sharpen their game ahead of the preparations for next year’s ICC Cricket World Cup. The team left for Uganda yesterday on a one-week tour after getting an invitation from the Uganda Cricket Association to play their select sides as part of the hosts’ preparation for the ICC Division II Cricket league qualifiers scheduled for next month.

The Takashinga squad has a vast array of national team players that include Prosper Utseya, Tinashe Panyangara, Tafadzwa Kamungozi, Shingi Masakadza, Timycen Maruma and Regis Chakabva.

“One thing that we are emphasising is that we are not going there on holiday. We have a very competitive side and I am glad we also have some national team players, some of whom have been included in the Zimbabwe World Cup provisional squad,” said Dube.

“I think we will give Uganda a good run for their money. The guys are well prepared for this challenge.

“Most of them have been playing franchise cricket of late and in terms of fitness they should be okay.”

Uganda will be battling for the top four slots against Canada, Kenya, Namibia, Nepal and Netherlands and need to win at least two of their five matches for them to be assured of staying in Division II.

The qualifiers will take place in Namibia from January 17-24.

Takashinga’s co-founder Steve Mangongo believes the invitation by Uganda was a big vote of confidence in their club.

“I believe it’s an honour and a big privilege to be invited by Uganda Cricket Association to play their national team as they prepare for their qualifiers.

“As one of the biggest clubs in Africa, this is one way we are helping to spread the game on the continent.

“If we can agree to help these guys to prepare for such a big tournament, then I believe we have done our part,” said Mangongo.
