BRENDAN Taylor showed his class with the bat yesterday as he led Zimbabwe to a convincing eight-wicket victory over Northern Districts XI, at the Harry Barker Reserve in Gisborne, New Zealand, in the second warm up match.

Chasing a target of 266 after the hosts had won the toss, Taylor top scored for Zimbabwe with an unbeaten 87 off 72 deliveries with 11 fours and three sixes.

Sikandar Raza-Butt and Chamunorwa “Tsano” Chibhabha also chipped in with a half century each.

First to go was Raza-Butt, after scoring 63 off 64 deliveries with six fours and two sixes, when he was caught off a Jonathan Hickey delivery, breaking the 133-run partnership with Chibhabha for the first wicket in 20.4 overs.

Chibhabha (62 off 70 with eight fours) was soon to follow but then this paved way for a g third wicket 127-run partnership between Taylor and Hamilton Masakadza, who was also unbeaten on 41, a top order performance Zimbabwe would love to see going into the World Cup.

The match was wrapped up in the 41st over. Tawanda Mupariwa, Tinashe Pananyagara, Tafadzwa Kamungozi, Sean Williams and Butt took a wicket each as Zimbabwe won the match to raise their hopes ahead of the third practice match tomorrow. The Northern Districts XI bowling attack lacked penetration and while Jono Hickey (115) and Arnie Yugaraja (134) had some success, it was not enough to deny Zimbabwe the win.

For the Northern Districts XI, Brett Hampton (70*) and Danny Gibbs (59) were the chief contributors in getting to what seemed a par score for the home side.

The two teams meet again for the last time tomorrow, at the same venue, before Zimbabwe moves on to lock horns against Sri Lanka and New Zealand in further dress rehearsals for the ICC Cricket World Cup tournament.
