A SILOBELA teenager aged 19 was last week slapped with an effective nine year jail term after he was convicted for raping his six year old niece left.

He attacked the child after she had been left in custody by her grandmother who was working in the nearby fields.

Regional magistrate, Morgan Nemadire, initially sentenced Thulani Moyo to 12 years in prison but suspended three years for five years on condition of good behaviour.

Moyo who resides in village Makende under Chief Malisa in Silobela pleaded guilty to the charge and begged the court to be lenient with him.

Nemadire however, said Moyo’s actions were atrocious and called for a deterrent sentence.

Allegations were that on March 3, this year, at around 1500 hrs in the afternoon complainant was at home with Moyo after her grandmother had left for the fields.

Moyo grabbed the minor by the hand and pulled her into a kitchen hut where he pushed her to the ground before closing the door.

He undressed r and raped her once before threatening her with death if she revealed the abuse to anyone.

But the girl screamed calling her grandmother who rushed to the homestead causing Moyo to flee from the scene only putting on his undergarment while he clutched his trousers.

The child was afraid to tell her grandmother what had happened but she (grandmother) nevertheless reported the matter to ZRP Silobela leading to accused’s arrest.

A medical report revealed that she had been sexually abused.
