ZIMBABWE seems to be struggling to get over South Africa’s dominance in tennis having lost in the battle for gold in the singles and now settling for silver in the team events.

Team events in tennis refer to matches in which players compete to win the tournament for their team.

Team Zimbabwe and South Africa emerged as the leading sides and as such earned valuable points to compete against each other for the top honours.

First to enter the court was Zimbawe’s Ronzai Saurombe against singles gold medalist, South African Francios Kellerman.

The two met for the second time in a singles encounter with Kellerman getting the better of Saurombe 6-2, 2-6, 6-2.

Taremedzwa Mariga lost to African Musawenkosi Mpondi 6-7, 6-4, 6-7.

Gold medalist Bhunu came to the rescue of the hosts in her clash with South Africa Kate Poluta.

She won 6-7, 6-0, 6-4. Rufaro Chirewa met South Africa girls’ ace Caitlin Herb with the latter winning 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. As the rains pounded the courts, the tournament referee was forced to suspend the Games, which will get underway this morning.

Zimbabwe are still in second place with two gold and four silver medals.

Today the tennis tournament in the Games will come to an end with Zimbabwe and South Africa in the doubles.
