All is set for the third edition of the Tertiary Institutions Festival of the Arts in Zimbabwe that is set for Mkoba Teachers College in Gweru next month. Running under the theme “Sustainable Transformation through Creativity and Responsible Citizenry” the three-day festival that begins on August 5 will feature activities like traditional dance, textile and fashion design, graphic and commercial design, drama, poetry, visual arts and music.

Chairperson of the festival Atanas Ruzive said though they would engage the community the events are open to tertiary institution students.

“We have already engaged the community but our events are open to tertiary students to showcase their talent,” said Ruzive.

Ruzive said they wanted the students to impart the skills they were trained at their institutions at the festival that enables sustainable development through arts.

“Students should maximise this opportunity as it enhances the development of the country through arts,” he said.

A number of colleges as well as Midlands State University and Chinhoyi University of Technology have confirmed their participation.

“Most colleges have shown interests in the festival and they have already confirmed their participation but only two universities have confirmed yet,” he said.

At least 2 000 students from various tertiary institutions are expected to take part at the event that will be graced by the Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Development Dr Olivia Muchena.

“Dr Muchena who is the Minister of Higher Education will grace the opening of the event and we are grateful of that,” he added.

Last year the festival was held in Bulawayo and many tertiary institutions participated.
