Home » Governance » Tsvangirai Got Mansion While We Wallow in Poverty – Sagandira

A LOSING former MDC-T candidate has hit out at Morgan Tsvangirai saying the former premier was the only person who benefited from the inclusive government after acquiring a luxury mansion for his private use while victims of political violence remain homeless.

Patrick Sagandira, who lost to Zanu PF’s Joseph Made in Makoni West during last year’s elections, has since linked up with ousted MDC-T secretary general Tendai Biti in the Renewal Team which is seeking to wrest power from Tsvangirai.

Sagandira told NewZimbabwe.com last Thursday in Rusape that while Tsvangirai remains safely ensconced at the posh pad in Harare’s upmarket Highlands neighbourhood which was acquired at government expense, victims of the 2008 political violence remain homeless and were never compensated.

“Tsvangirai is the only person who gained in the GNU because he acquired a mansion,” said Sagandira.

“But victims of political violence are still languishing in abject poverty and they were never compensated by the party.

“We have also been bankrolling MDC-T using our resources for a long time but Tsvangirai did not appreciate our efforts.

“He told people in Vhengere to vote for Simba Makoni or Zanu PF that’s why we lost here in Makoni Central. This (area) was our ghold.”

Reached for comment, MDC-T spokesman, Douglas Mwonzora, dismissed Sagandira’s allegations as complete rubbish.

“That’s utter rubbish. We all know that there are still legal issues relating to the house which have not been resolved. How can somebody speak of something that is still yet to be concluded?

“Tsvangirai brought relief to the suffering people of Zimbabwe when he became Prime Minister. The lives of our people changed for the better,” said Mwonzora.

Sagandira meanwhile blamed Tsvangirai for his loss to Zanu PF in Makoni Central.

He was asked to step down at the last minute to pave way for Mavambo leader, Simba Makoni, a decision he however defied.

“Poor judgment by Tsvangirai showed beyond doubt that people surrounding him had bigger brains than him. Some aisers brought in from the UK misled Tsvangirai to think that European and American politics were applicable to Africa,” said Sagandira.

But Mwonzora said the election was not lost but stolen.

“Does Sagandira not know that his own businesses were collapsed by Zanu PF? And why does he suddenly forget that? These are agents used by Zanu PF. Fortunately, we were able to flush them out of the MDC.”

He added: “MDC did not lose the election. There was Nikuv. Whether there was Sagandira there and there was Makoni there, Nikuv was there that accounts for the loss and also Mr Sagandira himself was an independent candidate why didn’t he win on his own?

“When it comes to victims of violence, the people who were in control of the finances in the country during GNU was Tendai Biti who should have put money to the welfare of victims of violence. He did not.

“And at party level, the people who were supposed to avail the funds were Tendai Biti, Elton Mangoma and Roy Bennett. They did not and how do they blame Tsvangirai for their failures.”

Mwonzora said the Renewal Team had nothing to offer that is why they continued to be fixated on Tsvangirai.

“People from renewal team have nothing else to say except denigrating Tsvangirai that is why they never criticise Zanu PF and Mugabe.

“They have nothing to say it’s Tsvangirai, Tsvangirai, Tsvangirai. What about Mugabe? That’s why we are saying they are agents of Zanu PF.

But Sagandira said work was continuing to build structures on the ground with a provincial rally set to be held in Mutare at the end of the month.

“We are in a serious recruitment drive and we will definitely make it come 2018,” said Sagandira.

Asked whether Biti would lead the Renewal Team into the 2018 elections, Sagandira said the party’s leader would come from the people at a congress scheduled for March next year.
