TWO men have appeared at the Masvingo Magistrates’ Court charged with the murder of a mental patient.

Tawanda Gono, 28, and Lee Shumba, 24, both of Rujeko high density suburb, were not formally charged when they appeared before Masvingo Provincial Magistrate, Langton Ndokera last week.

James Murambiza, for the state, told the court that Gono and Shumba fatally assaulted the now deceased Emisirayi Chinyengetere at his residence in Zvita Street, Rujeko C, earlier this month.

The court was told, Chinyengetere who has a record of mental illness appeared drunk on the day in question and attempted to hit Gono with an iron bar he was holding before pulling a knife from the right pocket of his trousers and trying to stab him.

Gono and Shumba retaliated by assaulting Chinyengetere, punching him with clenched fists all over the body.

The two also kicked Chinyengetere in the abdomen using booted feet. Chinyengetere died the following morning as a result to the assault.

Gono and Shumba are being represented by Collen Maboke of Ruvengo, Maboke Legal Practitioners.

In their defence the duo said that they had no intention of assaulting Chinyengetere but did so in self-defence since Chinyengetere attacked them first.

The trial continues.
