MANYAME rural council chairperson, Naison Mudzara, has said the local authority is failing to deal with “untouchable” land barons who are illegally selling land in the district.

Speaking to Mashonaland East provincial minister, Biggie Joel Matiza, at Dema Growth Point over the weekend, Madzura said the land barons had illegally sold over 5,000 stands in some 20 villages.

However, because of political interference, the land barons considered themselves untouchable adding no arrests had been made.

The minister promised to take action against those illegally selling stands and said arrests would soon be made adding beneficiaries of the illegal deals would be removed and the houses destroyed.

Zanu PF councillors and council employees in Manyame and Chitungwiza have been implicated in the illegal transactions.

An audit carried out by the Ministry of Local Government established that illegal stand allocations and developments were taking place on wetlands, power line servitudes, cemeteries and institutional stands.

In Manyame, one Mutemi and James Ndava constructed 44 cluster houses. They are, on average, collecting thousands of dollars per month in rentals but paying only US$3 to the Manyame Rural District Council.
