VAINONA Girls recorded the biggest winning score when they thrashed George Stark of Mbare 72-0 in the opening match of the Dairibord Schools Rugby festival which got underway yesterday at Prince Edward. Vainona were in control of the game in both the first and second halves. Tanya Bangamuseve was in good form with the boot and managed to convert all the six attempts with Lorraine Kuguyo weighing in with three tries.

Within 20 minutes, Vainona had five tries after Sarudzai Nyakudya touched down three times while Peace Sithole had two Hlengiwe Maphosa and Rumbidzai Meki and Nyarai Gwamure had a try each.

The team played at the Jubilee Field in the morning.

George Stark were a powerful force last year when they managed to string a number of a wins but they were found wanting yesterday. By half-time Vainona had piled 31 points. In the second half Vainona, who had the bigger players, kept their momentum as they quickly touched down six minutes after the break. Vainona are one of the top sides and they are now expected to play bitter rivals Girls High in their next fixture scheduled for tomorrow morning. Yesterday, Girls High beat Roosevelt 22-0.

Girls High centre Nonkosi Dingani said despite preventing Roosevelt from scoring, the match was a tough one.

“Our match against Roosevelt was tough, they are a good side although they could not register a single point.

“We are now looking forward to our next match against Vainona whom we are sure we can handle.

“We are a good side and we are confident that we are going to do well in our upcoming fixtures.”

Dingani scored a try in her team’s win.

Kuwadzana High and Hatfield drew 0-0. Rangai Chakwenya, the Kuwadzana coach, said her team started the festival on a low note.

“The girls started on a low note but I hope they will get there, this is the first time for them to take part in the festival and they will get used to it,” said Chakwenya.
