EX-VEHICLE Inspection Department (VID) boss turned traditional healer has appeared before a Victoria Falls magistrate for failing to pay maintenance.

Phinias Mawanza (39), who quit his VID job in May to become a traditional healer, defaulted in paying $175 per month he had been ordered to pay in May this year and the arrears have now accumulated to $890.

He only paid $30 between June and November this year to ex-wife Gladys Mawanza (46) for the upkeep of their three children.

Father of seven children with three different women, Mawanza has up to the end of the month to clear the arrears or risk being sent to jail after the magistrate, Sharon Rosemani, fined him $60 for the crime. Mawanza was further sentenced to an additional three months in jail which were wholly suspended on condition he pays his ex-wife the money.

The magistrate said she could not send the former Inspector to jail because he has children to take care of.

“I considered that you are a first offender who has a family to look after and sending you to jail would be like punishing the children. For that I will not send you to jail and also the complainant pleaded on your behalf saying she didn’t want you sent to jail as she is concerned about money for the children,” said the magistrate.

Gladys had told the court that she does not want her former husband to be jailed saying all she wanted was for him to pay up.

Prosecuting, Takunda Ndovorwi said Mawanza was in May this year ordered to pay $175 per month at the Maintenance Court plus school fees for the children.

He however failed to pay and gave his ex-wife $30 after he resigned from work in May to attend to some cultural duties, said the prosecutor.
