A MASVINGO woman faked the death of her son and went on to collect $1,500 funeral cover from a local insurance company, a local court heard Monday.

Dzokai Rutaga, 42, who is employed by Tongaat Hullet, pleaded guilty to fraud when she appeared before Masvingo magistrate, Victor Mohammed.

She was remanded in custody to Thursday for sentencing

Prosecutor Joshua Mundondo told the court that on 13 November last year, Dzokai, armed with a burial order, misrepresented to First Mutual Life Assurance Masvingo Branch that her son had died.

The court heard that she then made a funeral claim of $1,500 and was promptly given $1,200 with the $300 balance to be collected when she brought a death certificate.

On the 8th of December, she to a death certificate to the company and was given the balance.

The fraud came to light when auditors from the firm made follow ups on the claims and discovered the Dzokai’s son was alive and attending school, leading to her arrest.
