Zimbabweans join the rest of world in commemorating the World Blood Donor Day on Saturday. The event comes amid challenges faced by the sector, including the high price of blood.

In an interview yesterday, National Blood Service Zimbabwe spokesperson, Ms Esther Massundah said preparations for WBDD were underway and that the organisation was happy with the progress.

Bulawayo will host the event this year.

“We are hoping that on the day people from Bulawayo will come in and support this event,” she said.

“The event is important in that the theme is focused on the recipient, which is ‘thank you for saving my life’,” said Ms Massundah.

She said the programme would give people an opportunity to hear testimonies of recipients of blood and donors.

“We are going to be having a few people giving their testimonies about how blood has saved their lives,” she said.

She said the guest of honour, Dr David Parirenyatwa, the Minister of Health and Child Care, would deliver the keynote address.

“It is going to be a day filled with various activities. We are also going to launch our new logo, our new brand as NBSZ. It is going to be a big day for us by the same distinguished brand,” Ms Massundah said.

She said the programme would be held on June 13 at the Large City Hall car park in Bulawayo.
