ZIMBABWE moved one step closer to a medal at the African Union Sports Council Region 5 Under-20 Youth Games after defeating Swaziland 3-1 at Luveve yesterday.

The Young Warriors got their goals through Thomas Kadyaridzire, who scored a brace, and Thembalethu Mthunzi.

Meanwhile, it was party time at ZITF Hall 3 as Zimbabwe’s basketball team began their hunt for a medal in the games by beating South Africa 62-51 yesterday.

Zimbabwe beat their fancied opponents by racing to a lead and making sure that as much as South Africa sniffed a comeback they were always ahead.

As far as momentum goes, Zimbabwe had it in spades in this match.

They poked, probed and passed their way out of almost every jam that South Africa presented.

Zimbabwe’s biggest weapon was their ability to turn defence into instant attack.

What Zimbabwe lacked in top defenders, they more than made up it with disruptive length and athleticism in the frontcourt.

Zimbabwe also began their netball medal hunt in the games at White City Stadium by beating Botswana 52-20 yesterday.

The match was almost abandoned due to the rains that pounded the courts.

The teams had to wait for close to an hour to play.
