A ZANU PF councillor in Gweru has denied charges he raped a 16-year-old girl at gunpoint, telling a city court that the teenager’s mother fabricated the claim in order to get money from him.

Charles Simbi, a councillor for Ward 12 and well-known gold miner in the Midlands city, was first arraigned before the courts in February over the allegations.

The businessman told Gweru regional magistrate Morgan Nemadire Thursday that the girl’s mother fabricated the rape charges to extort money from him and tarnish his image after the pair fell out.

Simbi said he once employed the teenager’s mother (who is also his sister-in-law) at his night club but dismissed her over shortfalls on daily takings.

He said the rape allegation came up after he refused the woman’s demands for money.

Prosecutors say in September last year the Zanu PF councillor invited the girl to a lodge in Lundi Park where he asked her for sex.

After his aances were turned down, the businessman is said to have produced a pistol and forcibly undressed the teenager before raping her once.

He would rape the girl repeatedly on several occasions between September and November last year, prosecutors said.

The teenager later reported the abuse, leading to the arrest of the gold miner.

Simbi will reappear in court Friday for continuation of trial.
