THE systematic purging of senior party officials ahead of this week’s congress was not only necessary but also long overdue, Zanu PF has claimed.

In an official statement the party’s deputy director of information, Psychology Maziwisa said that “a lot of ZANU PF’s and Government’s precious time was now being wasted on unproductive plots. The purging is therefore not just in the party’s best interest it is in the nation’s best interest as well”.

Maziwisa said historians will look back on the ZANU PF 6th National People’s Congress as “Zimbabwe’s turning point”. He added: “Only unreasonable people would see the removal of bad apples as something that could spell catastrophic consequences for the party. Quite the opposite, ZANU PF will come out more united and better able to tackle the economic challenges”.

The statement follows the booting out of a number of senior party officials aligned to vice president Joice Mujuru ahead of the congress on allegations that they were plotting Mugabe’s ouster.

Maziwisa said: “The time has come to put the right people in the right positions and this congress will do just that.” He claimed that it was “right that Mugabe should surround himself with innovative and focused people who, like him, are capable of putting national interest ahead of selfish, personal interest”.

Maziwisa’s claims come at a time when Mugabe is himself seen as a hindrance to economic recovery and development of the country. Mugabe has been in power for over three decades and it is widely believed that the systematic purging of the Mujuru faction is meant to ease the way for his wife Grace’s takeover.
