THE Zimbabwe Development Party (ZDP) is demanding the immediate resignation of Local Government Minister Ignatius Chombo and his deputy Joel Biggie Matiza saying they have failed to deliver in their roles to plan and manage housing issues in the country.

In a letter leaked to this paper, ZDP president Kisinoti Mukwazhe, said Chombo’s performance in government gave the impression that voting for ZANU-PF was tantamount to inviting trouble as evidenced by the demolition of houses in 2005 through an exercise code-named “Operation Murambatsvina.”

“My party is hereby demanding your (Chombo) immediate resignation and that of your deputy Joel Biggie Matiza because your approach is in total contrast to the wishes of the people of Zimbabwe and the Constitution,” reads part of the letter. Mukwazhe said if government is serious with the demolitions, it should first compensate the victims and find alternative shelter for them.

“As ZDP, we are saying these people are already victims of land barons and improper performance by the Ministry headed by Chombo, Chitungwiza Municipality and to an extent, the Environmental Management Agency. So why should the victims be further victimised?” he queried.

The Financial Gazette also understands that ZDP was preparing flyers and pamphlets for distribution to the affected residents, which it hopes to be ready for distribution by tomorrow.

Through the pamphlets ZDP wants to pass solidarity messages to the residents telling them to stand firm and be prayerful to God for their houses to be delivered. — Staff Reporter.
