ZIMBABWE’S amateur golf team failed to recover in the final singles round of the 2014 Zone VI Golf Championships at Devonvale Golf and Wine Estate, where they finished second to continental powerhouse South Africa.

The country’s representatives failed to put a good mark on another unclean sweep for the country in Africa’s most prestigious team event.

South Africa retained their title with 23 points, finishing four points ahead of Zimbabwe with Namibia third on 15.5 points in the final standings.

Swaziland took fourth place with 14.5 points while Kenya finished in fifth place on 13 points. Zimbabwe’s Stuart Krogg and Jack Allard defeated Zander Lombard and Louis Taylor of South Africa 3 amp 2 but somehow their momentum took a knock when they failed in the singles. The players failed to deliver another commanding performance in the final round singles to finish as runners-up, repeating what they did some four years ago in Kenya.

The Zimbabwe Golf Association first vice-president Boniface Chigorimba congratulated the team for their performance. “The Zimbabwe golf team continued to raise the bar by taking seven points out of eight. As a result team Zimbabwe finished a credible second to South Africa in this year’s edition of the Zone VI golf tournament. Well done Zimbabwe,” Chigorimbo said.

The team was expected home yesterday evening.

Meanwhile, the Golden Pilsener Zimbabwe Open will be broadcasted on SuperSport this coming week.
