ZIMBABWE made a clean sweep in the 5 000m women final during Day Three of the African Union Sports Council Region 5 Under-20 Youth Games athletics meet at White City yesterday.Coming up in her second final after, romping to victory in the 3,000m a day earlier, Caroline Mhandu added a gold medal to the hosts table when she came home in 17minutes 45.72 seconds.

Anna Bungu, who clocked 17 mins 45.80s, was second while Bertha Chikanga, the 3000m silver medalist, settled for bronze in 18mins 11.82 s.

Mhandu and Chikanga, who were randomly picked for doping tests on Tuesday at the White City after completing their 3000m race, have been given the all-clear. Zimbabwe’s Athletics team manager, Benson Samu, said tests were conducted on the two athletes and no prohibited substances were found on their blood.

“We are pleased that Caroline and Betha are safe from doping. Doping tests were done on them and they were negative,” said Samu.

There are Anti-Doping Officials at the Region 5 Youth Games, who are monitoring every athlete closely.

The tests are done randomly.

“Anti-Doping officials are everywhere. If you are picked for anti-doping, they run the tests and check for certain substances. There are further tests that are done but once they have cleared the first results the athletes are given their medals,” said Samu.

Officially opening the Youth Games at the Barbourfields on Sunday, President Mugabe urged the region’s rising athletes to abstain from taking drugs and respect the Anti-Doping Code in sport.
