SOUTH Africa, Zimbabwe and Mozambique emerged as the early pacesetters after day two on the African Union Sports Council Region 5 Under-20 Youth Games athletics competition at White City.

The three countries have a total of 20 gold.

South Africa has eight while Mozambique and hosts Zimbabwe have six each.

Zimbabwe have 11 silver and 10 bronze medals.

Day two also saw more than 4 000 fans thronging the world-class venue to witness the cream of the Southern Region’s future athletic stars.

The race of the day was the 5 000-metre men’s final as it provided some spectacular competition that saw the Zimbabwean duo of Tendai Zimuto and Moses Tarakinyu coming first and second.

Zimuto clocked 15 minutes 19,61 seconds while Tarakinyu clocked 15 minutes 21,69 seconds.

Sport, Arts and Culture Minister Andrew Langa and African Union Sports Council Region 5 chairman Vetumbuavi Veii were some of the dignitaries who graced the athletics event.
