Journalists covering the arrival of Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe from the African Union Summit in Ethiopia on 4 February 2014 were forced to delete pictures they had taken as he fell at Harare International Airport.

President Mugabe reportedly missed a step and fell as he descended the podium after addressing Zanu PF supporters that thronged the airport to welcome him from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where he took over as chairman of the African Union. He was then escorted to his car that left speedily after this incident.

Mugabe’s security detail, however, forced some journalists, including those from the Associated Press, which had captured the incident on their cameras to delete the pictures.

On 30 January 2015, Mugabe was elected Chair of the 54-nation African Union (AU) at the summit, a largely ceremonial role. His role in the AU led the European Union (EU) to ease the travel ban placed on Mugabe during his term as Chairman.
