The Zimbabwe Republic Police will soon introduce a regulation barring clearance of unbranded cattle to curb stock-theft, a senior officer has said.

Police Deputy Commissioner-General (Operations) Innocent Matibiri said this while officiating at a Cattle Branding Village Model launch at Tengwe Business Centre in Hurungwe East on Wednesday. Dep Comm-Gen Matibiri, who was standing in for Comm-Gen Augustine Chihuri, asked: “Without a brand how do you think we can prove that you are the owner of the animal?”

He urged farmers to take branding seriously, adding that they must pen their livestock because many traffic accidents were being caused by stray animals. Dep Comm-Gen Matibiri said Government was introducing standard fencing along the highways.

Meanwhile, Commanding officer for Mashonaland West, Senior Assistant Comm Rangarirai Mushaurwa had harsh words for rapists whom she said had become the biggest threat to the security of the girl child. She urged communities to respect neighbourhood watch committees and work with them to fight crime. “We have members of the neighbourhood watch in your areas, please don’t despise them as they have our full mandate to arrest criminals. Please in areas where they are few, we are prepared to recruit more of them,” she said.

A farmer, Mr Jan Kageler, donated a breeding Tuli bull to be used by the Tengwe community to improve the genetic make-up of their stock.

Among those present at the launch were chiefs, host MP Cde Sarah Mahoka (Zanu-PF), Home Affairs Deputy Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi, Hurungwe West MP and Zanu-PF Mashonaland West provincial chair Cde Temba Mliswa, ruling party Central Committee member Cde Pauline Musonza, Hurungwe District Administrator Ms Tsana Chirau and Hurungwe Rural District Council boss Mr Joram Moyo.
