ALGIERS, Algeria is following "with concern" the developments of the situation in Zimbabwe and has urged all those involved to abide by the constitutional order, says the the Spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abdelaziz Benali Cherif.

"We are following with concern the latest developments of the situation in Zimbabwe," Benali Cherif told APS here Thursday.

"We call for calm and restraint, and urge all actors involved to abide by the constitutional order and not let it get out of control, which would be prejudicial to Zimbabwe and its people.

"We support the efforts being made by the region's countries as members of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) to favour a quick return to normalcy."

The Zimbabwe Defence Forces announced Wednesday over the State broadcasting corporation that they had taken action to defuse the country's deteriorating political, social and economic situation in the country which, if left unchecked, would have resulted in violent conflict.

Their intervention, they emphasised, was not a coup but corrective action necessitated by circumstances as they upheld their allegiance to their Commander-in-Chief, President Robert Mugabe.

However, Mugabe and his family are confined to their residence, State House Harare.
