Tamale: A forum on youth and elections, organised by Catholic Relief Services (CRS), has been held to empower young people to actively participate in the election process, ensuring it is both peaceful and credible. The initiative aimed to address the trust deficit between youth and security services, foster collaboration, and promote civic responsibility to mitigate risks of electoral violence, thereby strengthening community resilience amidst political tensions. According to Ghana News Agency, the forum, which gathered youth from various communities in the Northern Region, is part of the CRS project named PoVETSA II. This project, implemented in partnership with the National Peace Council, is a continuation of PoVETSA I and seeks to improve civilian-security trust relations to prevent violent extremism. It is supported by the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) and funded by the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Mr. Timothy Akanpabadai, Head of Office, Tamale, CRS, emphasi zed to participants during the two-day forum the significance of young individuals playing active roles in promoting peace and justice within their communities. He encouraged them to share their experiences, stand for justice and peace, and act as advocates of peace. He advised against becoming instruments of destruction and urged the youth to model positive behavior and inspire their peers. Mr. Augustine Owusu, Head of Peace and Security Programme at KAIPTC, advised the youth to approach discussions with open-mindedness and generate constructive ideas. He emphasized the importance of strategies that empower youth to engage constructively in elections and sustain their involvement in governance and national development. Madam Saadatu Maida, a Council Member of the Northern Regional Peace Council, encouraged the youth to act as peace ambassadors, promoting more inclusive, resilient, and peaceful communities. Miss Adelaide Yiriyelleh, Project Manager in charge of PoVETSA II at CRS, urged participants to share the knowledge gained with peers and community members and actively promote peaceful elections.
