HARARE, May 20 — A 25-member Chinese investment mission has arrived here to explore investment opportunities in various sectors of the Zimbabwean economy.

The Ministry of Economic Planning and Investment Promotion said in a statement here that the delegation, which arrived in Harare Tuesday, consisted of representatives of companies specialising in areas such as mining, health, textiles, investment and project contracting.

“The purpose of their visit is mainly to explore the investment environment of the country and also scout for potential opportunities for further co-operation,” the statement added.

The Chinese Council for Promoting South-South Co-operation is leading the investment mission. China is Zimbabwe’s biggest trading partner in the world, a relationship anchored on solid political ties.

President Robert Mugabe last year visited China where he signed multi-billion investment agreements in infrastructure development, among other areas.

The Ministry of Economic Planning said an investment conference will be held Wednesday at which the members of the Chinese delegation will meet Zimbabwean government and business officials. “This conference will go a long way in strengthening the existing economic ties between Zimbabwe and China,’ the ministry said.

The conference, among other subjects, is also expected to tackle policy, regulatory and legal aspects affecting investment in Zimbabwe. The two countries have already signed a Bilateral Investment Promotion
and Protection Agreement that serves to strengthen ties and ensure protection of investments by nationals of both countries.
