HARARE, Dec 2 (NNN-NEW ZIANA) — Visiting Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday toured the National Heroes Acre in Harare where he urged countries never to forget the exploits of heroes.

Xi arrived in Zimbabwe earlier Tuesday for a two-day State visit during which he is expected to oversee the signing of several investment deals between the two countries.

He was accompanied on the visit to the national heroes cemetery by Information Communication Technology (ICT) Minister Supa Mandiwanzira and Foreign Affairs Minister Simbarashe Mumbengegwi.

Speaking after touring the National Heroes Acre, where he also laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, President Xi said the contributions made by heroes towards the attainment of independence should never be under-estimated.

“We should never forget the exploits of our national heroes. It is what makes our countries dynamic and move forward,” he said.

China and Zimbabwe concluded several investment deals, mainly in the energy sector, telecommunications and infrastructure last year during President Robert Mugabe’s visit to Beijing.

However, most of the deals, which run into billions of dollars, have not yet taken off the ground, and President Xi’s visit to Zimbabwe is expected to give impetus for implementation of the projects.

The energy sector is particularly key for Zimbabwe as the country is currently experiencing severe power shortages, badly constraining its economy. — NNN-NEW ZIANA
