HARARE, Coup rumours are swirling in Zimbabwe as the army chief warned that the military will intervene if the ruling party, ZANU-PF, continues to purge veterans and the leader of the ZANU PF youth wing, Kudzai Chiphanga, said the army was reading the country's Constitution selectively and should be confined to the barracks.

His comments came in reaction to Monday's media conference by the commander of the Zimbabwe Defence Force, General Constantino Chiwenga, who said said the defence force would step in if the ruling party continued to purge veterans.

On Tuesday, Gen Chiphanga issued a warning that the army will intervene if President Robert Mugabe continued his tactics in an effort to help his wife, Grace Mugabe, succeed him as ZANU PF and Zimbabwe president.

Earlier Tuesdyay, reports emerged that four tanks were headed towards Harare. Tanks were seen moving near the capital in the afternoon. The sightings have been confirmed by the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) correspondent in Harare. The reason for their presence is not clear

Earlier on Tuesday, Zanu-PF youth said they are prepared to die in defence of President Mugabe's government.
