HARARE-- Former Zimbabwean Health and Child Care Minister Dr David Parirenyatwa has appeared in court to face charges of criminal abuse of office.
Dr Parirenyatwa was granted bail in the amount of 1,000 US dollars by the Harare Regional Magistrates Court Thursday after beign arrested earlier in the day.
Allegations are that Dr Parirenyatwa abused his office in June this year by directing National Pharmaceutical Company (NatPharm) board chairman Dr George Washaya to end Flora Sifeku's contract with the company so that she works at the Ministry's head office for an indefinite period.
It is also alleged that in the same directive, Dr Parirenyatwa showed favour to Deputy Director of Pharmaceutical Services Newman Madzikwa by appointing him as acting managing director for Natpharm with effect from June 1, 2018.
The new board, it is alleged, implemented the directive by giving both Sifeku and Madzikwa six months' contracts effective from I June to 30 November 2018.
This was despite that Madzikwa had been fired from Natpharm in Masvingo Province in 2009 for stealing drugs donated to private institutions.
The accused's actions created a double dipping of Natpharm funds as it had the potential prejudicing the government drugs manufacturer of 30,000 USD for the two employees salaries.
The offence came to light through a tip-off on Sept 11, 2018 leading to the arrest of the former minister on Sept 13.
