THE GWERU derby once again failed to produce a winner as Chapungu and Whawha played out a one-all draw in a Castle Lager Premier Soccer League match played at Ascot yesterday.

Dynamos reject Patrick Kumbula’s sixth minute goal for Chapungu was cancelled by William Ngonya’s 14th minute own goal.

The reverse fixture ended in a goalless draw but yesterday the day belonged to Khumbula who was making his debut for Chapungu after being offloaded by Harare giants Dynamos.

Both coaches were content with the result, but were left to rue a number of missed chances.

Chapungu coach John Nyikadzino was impressed by new acquisition Khumbula, saying his presence added some impetus into the attack.

“Derbies are difficult, so a draw is a fair result. I am also impressed by Khumbula, his experience helped us. We are looking forward to having his experience helping us in future,” said Nyikadzino.

Whawha coach Luke Petros Jukulile said lack of experience in front of goal denied them victory.

“We created so many chances but failed to convert them. This affected us much. We need to work on our finishing because we created chances but failed to score,” said Jukulile.

Khumbula, who was in high spirits, scored his first Chapungu goal as early as the 6th minute, giving fans the hope for an avalanche of goals.

With a bit of luck, he could have added a second midway in the first half.

It was no fluke that he was on target tapping in from close range a cross from Tinei Chitora, another striker who left DeMbare in a huff two seasons ago.

Whawha was to equalise eight minutes later, with Chapungu defender Ngonya beating his own keeper in an attempt to clear a Khama Chidzero cross from the right.

Khumbula could have doubled the score line moments later when he was sent through by Allan Tavarwisa, but Whawha goalkeeper Philip Nhete came off his line to narrow the angle and blocked the effort with his legs for a corner which could not yield results.
