Following on from an exciting weekend of main circuit racing at Donnybrook Raceway in Harare, motorsport fans and in particular, the dedicated drag racing fan base, will be looking forward to the third event of the 2015 Telecel Drag Racing Series at the same venue this coming Sunday.

In addition to the usual programme, South African competitor Reg Murray will be making a return appearance at this weekend’s event which is once again expected to attract thousands of local motor racing fans at the home of motorsport in Zimbabwe.

Last year Murray attended in his rail car and, as expected, took the title of fastest car of the day.

This year Murray returns with his Chev Chevair purpose built drag car, having set class records back in South Africa, hoping to once again claim the title of fastest car of the day at Donnybrook for the third consecutive year.

Word on the ground, however, is that Murray could be in for a surprise this year. The elapsed times of local cars have shown notable improvement throughout the year, particularly those drivers at the top of the game.

Alan Cacace and Terry Allberry, driving V8 AC Cobras, Mano Zevgolis, in his Castrol Toyota MR2, and Kevin Allmark and Mebs Kerbelker in Subarus, remain highly competitive and will be serious challengers to the South African visitor.

Murray had something extra to smile about last year as he beat the incentive challenge of being the first car in the 2014 Drag Racing Series to break the 10-second bracket, with a time of 10,212 seconds, winning himself $200.

The incentive challenge for the 2015 Series is still up for grabs and top contenders in the motor vehicle and motorcycle fields are keen to get their hands on $500 on offer for breaking the 10,50-second and 9,50-second elapsed time brackets consecutively.

The day’s action is set to get underway at around 9:30am with the Bracket Championship, limited to a set number of competitors.

This will be followed by the day’s Qualifying and Grudge racing between 11:45 am and 3:45 pm, finishing with the Eliminations event at 4pm.

Registration to drivers and riders will be open between 9:30am and 2:30pm.

Whilst the competition at the top will be fierce and existing grudges intense, the usual large field of vehicles is expected through the 10-motor vehicle and three-motorcycle classes, ranging from experienced drivers and riders, to first time public drag racers.

Prizes will be up for grabs for those placed 1st, 2nd and 3rd across the 13 classes.

This Sunday promises to be another exciting day out for the whole family with full bar and catering, stalls and entertainment for the kids.

The 2015 Drag Racing Series, which attracts an average of 4 000 spectators at each event at Donnybrook, is proudly partnered by Telecel, hp lubes/Castrol, Financial Gazette, Turbo Solutions Africa, Oracle Imaging and Autobusiness.
