HARARE, Robert Mugabe, 93, has officially resigned as the President of Zimbabwe after ruling the country for 37 years since it gained independence, the Speaker of the Zimbabwean Parliament, Jacob Mudendahe, announced here Tuesday as the legislature was preparing to debate a motion from MPs from his own ZANU-PF party to impeach him.

The Speaker said he had received a letter of resignation from Mugabe.

Former Zimbabwean and ZANU-PF vice-president Emmerson Mnangagwa, who was dismissed by Mugabe two weeks ago, will be sworn in as president on Wednesday or Thursday, says ZANU-PF legal secretary Patrick Chinamasa, who confirmed this after the resignation of Mugabe earlier Tuesday night.

A South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) reported quoted ZANU-PF Parliament Chief Whip Lovemore Matuke as saying that Mnangagwa would serve the remainder of Mugabe's term until the next general election, which must be held by September 2018.

Politicans in Zimbabwe have welcomed the resignation of Mugabe but warn that major efforts are needed to bring the country to order. Mugabe submitted his resignation to Parliament in writing on Tuesday evening.

He had previously refused to resign, despite last week's military takeover and days of protests. In the letter, Mugabe said that he decided to step down to allow for a smooth transition of power in the country.

Meanwhile, the announcement of Mugabe's resignation by the Speaker triggered scenes of joy as celebrations broke out not only on the streets of Harare but also in the Parliament.

On Sunday, Zimbabwe's ruling party announced that Mugabe had been removed from his position as President and first secretary of the ZANU PF by a unanimous vote at a Central Committee Special Session in Harare. The party said he has been given until midday on Monday to resign from his position as Head of State.
