A Dangamvura woman who pickpocketed a police officer who was sitting next to her in a commuter omnibus on their way to Nyanga has been jailed for two months.

Ndazivei Matiya, 26, was slapped with an effective six month jail term with three months suspended on condition that she does not commit a similar offence in the next five years.

Another month was set aside on condition that she pays Plaxedes Mabombe, 27, her $55. Matsiya will now serve an effective two months behind bars.

Public prosecutor, Donald Mudadirwa, told the court that Matiya was sitting next to a police officer Mabombe from Tsvingwe in Penhalonga.

She noticed that the police officer had cash in her handbag. When the commuter reached Hartzell, Matiya took a jacket to cover both her legs and Mabombe’s hand bag.

She managed to open the bag and stole $655 cash which she hid in her bag.

Matiya dropped off at Mapara turn-off in a bid to escape.

Mabonde later realised that her handbag was open and asked the driver to make a u turn. They found Matiya still at the bus stop.

She was taken to Mutare Central police station where she was searched and $600 was recovered.
