HARARE, Nov 25 9NNN-NEW ZIANA) — The smuggling of minerals, influx of irregular migrants and poaching of animals remain as major security concerns for Zimbabwe, Zambia and the entire Southern African Development Community (SADC) region, says a senior Zimbabwean government official.

Addressing the 30th session of the Zimbabwe-Zambia Joint Permanent Commission on Defense and Security (JPCDS) here Tuesday, the Permanent Secretary to the Defence Ministry. Martin Rushwaya, said the security situation along the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia was stable.

“However, I note with concern that the smuggling of precious minerals and the influx of irregular migrants, particularly from the Great Lakes Region and the Horn of Africa, and the poaching of elephants and rhinoceros remain major security challenges for our two countries and the entire SADC region,” he said.

Rushwaya said apart from bilateral security challenges, the meeting would afford the two countries an opportunity to review pertinent international, continental as well as regional peace and security issues.

“In that regard, we are concerned that the efforts that have been deployed to enhance peace and stability in Mozambique have not been uccessfully concluded. However we commend the SADC for the vital role it is playing to bring lasting peace to Lesotho and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC),” he added.

He said the regular manner in which the meetings were being conducted was clear testimony of the cordial relations that existed between the defenxe and security services of the two countries.

The meeting, which offers a platform for sharing ideas on ways of combating common threats that confront the two countries and the entire region is running from Nov 23 to 27 this year.
