HARARE, The commander of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF), General Constantino Chiwenga, has been retired pending redeployment and has been replaced by former Army Commander Lieutenant-General Phillip Valerio Sibanda, the government says.

The new appointment is among a host of changes within the ZDF structure which was announced here Monday by Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet Dr Misheck Sibanda.

Gen. Chiwenga is largely tipped to be appointed Vice-President of the Republic after masterminding the military intervention which resulted in the resignation of former President Robert Mugabe and ascendance of President Emerson Mnangagwa.

Lieutenant-General Edzai Absalom Chimonyo, previously Zimbabwe's ambassador to Tanzania, has been appointed to take over the reins at the Zimbabwe national Army (ZNA), replacing Gen. Sibanda.

At the Air Force, Air Marshal Elson Moyo has been promoted to take over from retired Air Marshall Perrance Shiri who was redeployed to become Agriculture, Mechanization and Irrigation Development Minister. Upon his retirement from the Air Force, Shiri was promoted to the rank of Air Chief Marshal.

At the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), Commissioner-General Dr Augustine Chihuri has been retired and Deputy Commissioner-General Godwin Matanga has been appointed to head the police force in an acting capacity.

Dr Sibanda said the appointments took immediate effect.
