BANKS should consider opening on Sundays so that workers can quickly withdraw their salaries instead of wasting productive time in queues, Home Affairs minister Ignatius Chombo has said.

Chombo accused businesses of heeding calls to close shop during last week's national shutdown saying they were sponsored by Western embassies and countries.

"If banks understood well they should open even on Sundays so that people can get their money on time," Chombo told Zanu PF supporters at a rally in Gweru last weekend.

"If a teacher wants to withdraw his salary he should be able to do so quickly and go back to school to resume his duties."

Due to cash shortages, long queues have become the order of the day at local banks, particularly during pay dates.

The situation has been worsened by cash withdrawal limits with people often visiting banks twice or more to withdraw their salaries.
