LOCAL doctors have appealed to President Robert Mugabe to help address problems in the health sector saying many are forced to walk to work while hospital executives use government funds to enrich themselves.

In a statement, the Zimbabwe Hospital Doctors Association (ZHDA) welcomed the decision by Mugabe to force treasury to pay civil servants their 2015 bonuses but urged the veteran leader to similarly intervene on other outstanding matters in the health sector.

"Your Excellency we await the day when government considers availing non-cash incentives such as the provision of duty free vehicles and downward revision of rentals in hospital provided accommodation for your struggling health workers," said ZHDA.

"Our doctors and health workers continue to walk on foot to work and we are confident that with your intervention we can bring this matter to finality.

"We also wait the day when the dark cloud over lack of transparency and executive enrichment at the different hospitals is going to be nipped in the bud."

The doctors' association expressed concern over maladministration at state hospitals around the country.

Backing their allegations of corruption, ZHDA explained, was the saga at Harare Central Hospital where chief executive, Peggy Zvavamwe, allegedly ordered the finance department to stop procuring drugs until they buy her a car worth almost $90,000.

ZHDA also dismissed as "untrue, unfounded, malicious and defamatory" reports that doctors were planning to go on strike.
