OPPOSITION Viva Zimbabwe leader William Mutumanje, better known as Acie Lumumba, was Monday released on $300 bail after his arrest on allegations of forging the registration book for his mother's car.

The former Zanu PF youth leader was also recently bailed after being arrested for allegedly insulting President Robert Mugabe using the f-word.

In the latest case, Lumumba is jointly charged with his personal assistant Tonderai Maposa, 21, who was also freed Monday on $300 bail.

The two were charged with forgery when they appeared before magistrate Tendai Mahwe.

Opposing bail, investigating officer Israel Mhondiwa said police were not sure about Maposa's actually identity.

"Maposa did not provide us with particulars to confirm his identity; neither did he provide us with his next of kin," he said.

"The business address Viva Zimbabwe he provided is actually a residential property owned by Lumumba and his family.

"We need to investigate how they obtained the number plates (for the car). The vehicle was smuggled into Zimbabwe and we need to establish how, when and by whom.

"The pair did not commit the offence alone. They have accomplices within our boarders; printing institutions and (facilities) where number plates are manufactured."

Prosecutor Sebastian Mutizirwa alleged that on an unknown date, Lumumba and Maposa had in their possession a Toyota Ipsum registration number ABR 6297.

It is claimed that the vehicle had no record either at the Central Vehicle Registry (CVR) or the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) databases.

Court heard that the pair connived with one Gilson Mubaiwa who is still at large and forged a vehicle registration book serial number 00056298.

They fraudulently affix the vehicle's particulars and Lumumba's residential address on the counterfeit registration book.

According to the State, Lumumba's mother, Agnes Mutumanje, was registered as the owner of the vehicle.

Maposa reportedly then took the vehicle to Royal Car Sales in Harare and misrepresented that the vehicle was properly registered.

Court heard that on July 17, last year, Evans Mereki found a buyer for the vehicle, Justice Mabuto and received a cash payment of $1,850.

Lumumba later handed over the registration book and Mabuto took it to ZINARA Marondera offices intending to buy vehicle licence and was told that the registration book was fake.

Mabuto proceeded to the police and the registration book was taken to CVR were they confirmed that it was fraudulent.

Mabuto lost $1,850 and nothing was recovered.

Upon his arrest Lumumba was driving a white Mercedes Benz vehicle registration number ADV 5087 and investigations have allegedly revealed that it was also not in the CVR database.
