HARARE, Indonesia has invited Zimbabwean businesses to participate in a trade fair to be held in Jakarta next month in order to help develop trade and economic ties between the two countries.

The Minister Counselor of the Indonesian Embassy in Harare, Dr Partogi Samosir, said Wednesday that Zimbabwean companies would benefit tremendously if they took part in the expo, a key gateway to the 200 million Indonesian market.

The trade fair will run from Oct 11 to 15.

"Trade Expo Indonesia 2017 will showcase more than 300 Indonesian local products which have been received on the international market, including strategic industries, hi-tech manufacturing, natural resource-based products, and products of creative industries, Partogi said.

"The expo will present productive industrial conferences, effective one-on-one business matching and business forum to explore business and investment opportunities between Zimbabwean and Indonesian businesspersons."

Trade promotion agency Zimtrade Chairman Lance Jena told New Ziana that such opportunities are beneficial to Zimbabwe which is seeking to grow its economy. "We feel this is an opportunity for Zimbabwean companies to benefit, we encourage industry to take it up and participate because that is the only way we can grow this economy," he said.

The 2016 edition of the expo attracted 15,567 visitors from 125 countries, including buyers from various regions, including Africa and Europe.

Despite the absence of a formal trade agreement between Zimbabwe and Indonesia, trade flows between the two countries were significant in the period 1999 to 2000 before western countries imposed sanctions on Zimbabwe.
