HARARE, July 1 — The High Court here has sentenced three police officers and one civilian to death after convicting them of murdering a security guard in an armed robbery at a farm in Chishawasha, near here, four years ago.

Justice Hlekani Mwayera sentenced Emmanuel Dolosi and the three police officers — Kudzai Madziro, Leeroy Muteyera, Ronald Roorai Sambo — to death on the basis that their moral blameworthiness was high and hence required capital punishment.

“This offense was committed during an armed robbery by police officers at a police farm and the conduct showed that it was during an unlawful enterprise,” she said.

“We have a situation where law enforcers have turned into robbers. Instead of the police protecting they decided to rob the people. As such you are sentenced to death. The document will be sent to the President for verification and you are free to approach the Supreme Court for purposes of appeal.”

Prosecutor Douglas Chesa said the crime committed attracted a capital sentence. “For justice to be done in this matter, the court is urged to call a spade a spade and give a sentence befitting to which the offence was committed,” he said.

It was the State’s case that sometime in June 2010, the four accused in the company of their accomplices Clever Ndhlovu another police officer now deceased and Ocean Munjeri who is still at large connived and
hatched a plan to steal building materials at Gletwin farm in Chishawasha through armed robbery.
