HARARE, President Emmerson Mnangagwa of Zimbababwe has appointed retired General Constantino Chiwenga and Defence Minister Kembo Mohadi as vice-presidents and second secretaries of the ruling party, Zanu PF.

President Mnangagwa, who was confirmed as the party's leader at an extraordinary congress held earlier this month, had been expected to make the announcement at that time, but delayed the appointments until the weekend.

Presidential Press Secretary George Charamba said in a statement here that the appointments took immediate effect.

The appointments mean the two will also be appointed the country's Vice-Presidents.

Before his appointment, Gen Chiwenga was the commander of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces while Mohadi was recently appointed Defence, Security and War Veterans Minister.

The appointments complete the re-birth of the ruling party, with total changes in the top leadership, following dramatic circumstances which saw former president Robert Mugabe being recalled as the party's president and first secretary in mid-November.

President Mnangagwa also appointed at the party congress several top officials in the ruling party.
