HARARE, Zimbabweans celebrated on the streets of Harare Tuesday after news broke that President Robert Mugabe has tendered his resignation in a letter to the Speaker of Parliament, a day before the ligislature was due to debate a motion submitted by MPs from his own party, ZANU-PF, to impeach him.

As the Speaker, Jacob Mudenda, confirmed the resignation, wild jubilation broke out among the Members of Parliament.

Meanwhile, Amnesty International says the next generation of leaders in Zimbabwe must commit themselves to upholding the constitution, living up to Zimbabwe's international human rights obligations and treating its people with dignity and justice.

Amnesty's Secretary-General, Salil Shetty was reacting to the news that Mugabe had resigned. Shetty said after more than three decades of violent repression, the way forward for the country was to renounce the abuses of the past and transition to a new era where the rule of law is respected and those who are responsible for injustices are held to account.
