HARARE-- President Emmerson Mnangagwa has called on Zimbabweans to remain united ahead of the general election scheduled for July 30 while urging them to use their skills to advance national interests in line with the government's vision to rebuild the country.
Speaking at the burial of veteran diplomat John Chimbandi at the National Heroes Acre cemetery here Sunday, he pledged to deliver "servant leadership" which fully recognizes the rights of the people.
Zimbabwe holds its Presidential, legislative and local government elections on July 30, the first under a new administration which is trying to open a new chapter after the era of President Robert Mugabe, who stepped down last November after leading the country since its independence in 1980.
Drawing from the life of our national hero (Chimbandi)I challenge us all as Zimbabweans whether at home or abroad, in whatever field, to use our professions and skills to advance the national interests of our nation, more so now, as we seek to rebuild our country to become a middle income economy by 2030, he said.
Growing the economy to improve the quality of life for the people is the new administration's top priority.
Chimbindi, 66, died last weekend following heart complications and according to President Mnangagwa, was honoured for his crucial role in Zimbabwe's liberation struggle and post independence dedication to national service.
He said the late diplomat had fought colonial rule to ensure people enjoyed basic rights, which the new administration was determined to ensure the people fully enjoy.
