HARARE, Zimbabwe's President Emmerson Mnangagwa will deliver his inaugural State of the Nation Address (SONA) to a joint sitting of the House of Assembly and Senate here Wednesday.

President Mnangagwa, who assumed power last month following the resignation of former president Robert Mugabe, faces a daunting task of reviving an economy battered by years of economic sanctions imposed by Britain and its western allies.

He has said one of the immediate task his government will seek to undertake is reviving the economy, leveraging on agriculture and the vast natural resource base, chiefly minerals.

His Excellency, the President, Comrade E.D. Mnangagwa, will tomorrow, Wednesday 20th December, 2017 deliver the State of the Nation Address at a joint sitting of the Senate and the National Assembly at the Harare International Conference Centre at half past two in the afternoon, the Speaker of the National Assembly Jacob Mudenda told legislators here Tuesday.

President Mnangagwa's SONA comes at a time when the country is grappling with widespread unjustified increases in prices of basic goods and commodities. Some manufacturers have argued that the price increases are a result of failure to access hard currency to import key raw materials.

Products whose prices have risen include milk, meat and cooking oil.

However, President Emmerson Mnangagwa has condemned the price hikes and appealed to retailers to exercise restraint, while long-term solutions to deal with their concerns are being sought. He said businesses should complement the government in the efforts to revive the economy by refraining from counter-productive measures, including multi-tier pricing systems.

President Mnangagwa has also prioritized implementing measures to deal with prevailing cash shortages.
