LUANDA, President Emmerson Mnagagwa of Zimbabwe arrives in Luanda Friday for a 24-hour visit to Angola aimed at discussing with his Angolan counterpart, President JoAPound o Lourenco, the political situation in that country.
A statement issued the President's Civil Affairs Office here Wednesday said President Lourenco, in his capacity as chair of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Organ for Politics, Defence and Security, will analyse with the Zimbabwean Head of State the arrangements for presidential elections in Zimbabwe due later this year.
The initiative is intended to legitimize the ongoing political transition in Zimbabawe following the resignation of long-serving former president Robert Mugabe in November, 2017, at the insistence of the ruling Zanu PF party and the subsequent swearing in of Mnagagwa on Nov 24 as interim president.
On Nov 13, the military took over control of government in Zimbabwe, placing Mugabe under house arrest and detaining several senior government officials. However, Mugabe later tesigned in a letter to Parliament and a few days later Mnagagwa took office as acting president of the country.
